DIY Activated Charcoal and Bentonite Clay Face Mask

Blemishes, blackheads and oily skin happen to the best of us at different points in our life. Stress, hormonal changes, and makeup can all contribute to excess oils and clogged pores resulting in your body fighting back with blemishes trying to clear the affected area.

While there are many facial masks on the market, many contain unscrupulous ingredients that can cause more harm than good. Ingredients that you’d never think of using on your skin like Butylene Glycol (antifreeze…like in your car) and Salicylic Acid (ah, yeah…you know that stuff you use to kill warts?)

While glycol helps companies keep their product from separating if it freezes, you may not expect to be putting it on your face…and Salicylic Acid can cause a burning skin irritation or even skin peeling. Salicylic acid breaks down skin cells (burning) resulting in smoother fresh skin…but there are just so many simpler and safer ways to take care of your skin that you can do yourself.

Activated Charcoal Mask

2 Ingredient Facial Mask for Oily Skin

5 ml (1 tsp) Activated Charcoal

5 ml (1 tsp) Bentonite Clay

10 ml (2 tsp) warm water

You’ll also need a face cloth and towel that you don’t mind getting dirty.

In a small dish, measure water and add bentonite clay by sprinkling on top. Allow the clay to be absorbed for 10 seconds. Sprinkle Activated Charcoal over clay and water and stir together until smooth. The amount of water may have to be adjusted until you have a creamy, smooth paste that is easy to apply. Wash your face and pat dry before beginning. Apply mask using fingers or a brush (such as a cosmetic or hair colouring brush) to your face until evenly coated. Avoid eye area including eyebrows. Allow mask to set.

After 5 minutes the mask should begin to harden. Allow mask to set for 10 – 15 minutes and then wash off using warm soapy water and a face cloth.  Pat dry. TIP: Wetting your face and allowing it to sit for 20 – 30 seconds helps soften the mask.

Washing Face

3 Ingredient Facial Mask for Normal to Dry Skin

5 ml (1 tsp) Activated Charcoal

5 ml (1 tsp) Bentonite Clay

10 ml (2 tsp) Melted Organic Coconut Oil (Note: hardened oil melts at 24° C)

You’ll also need a face cloth and towel that you don’t mind getting dirty.

In a small dish, measure melted oil and add bentonite clay by sprinkling on top. (TIP: If you oil is hard – simply place the dish of measured hard oil in a larger bowl of hot water. Coconut oil melts at a very low temp of only 24 °C. Heating on a stove or microwave could leave oil too hot and cause burns when applied to your skin)

Allow the clay to be absorbed for 10 seconds. Sprinkle Activated Charcoal over clay and oil and stir together until smooth. The amount of coconut oil may have to be adjusted until you have a creamy, smooth paste that is easy to apply. Wash your face and pat dry before beginning. Apply mask using fingers or a brush (such as a cosmetic or hair colouring brush) to your face until evenly coated. Avoid eye area including eyebrows.

Allow mask to set for 10 – 15 minutes and then wash off using warm soapy water and a face cloth.  Pat dry.

Benefits:

Firefly Activated CharcoalActivated Charcoal: or activated carbon, has an incredibly large surface that acts as an adsorbent – meaning that certain chemicals and toxins adhere to it readily. In fact, 1 cubic inch of activated charcoal contains the same surface area as an entire football field if you could physically count the microscopic pores that make up this wonder product. Using activated charcoal on your skin can help draw and bind dirt and hardened oils clogged deep within your pores.  Additionally, activated charcoal makes an excellent exfoliant to gently remove old skin cells and revitalize your complexion. Activated charcoal is formed as a fine crystalline solid that neither dissolves in water or oil. This means that even though it appears very black and you get it on your towels, it does not stain. Simply throw it in the wash and it will come out clean.

Bentonite ClayBentonite Clay: (Healing Clay / Western Clay / Calcium Bentonite) is made of weathered, volcanic ash and is known for its high absorbency qualities. This fine powdery clay has been used for centuries by people for many medical purposes including as a digestive aid and topically for bacterial infections. In addition, there is even strong research showing bentonite as being a detoxifying agent for mycotoxins, aflatoxins, and organochlorine pesticides which are known to be one of the most persistent organic pollutants present in the environment. For skincare, it can be very beneficial for absorbing excess sebum (that’s the oils on your skin). In addition, bentonite has a strong sponge-like quality which allows it to wick or “draw out” blocked pores.

Where to Buy:

It is important to always know where your products are sourced and the quality of them as well. Activated charcoal from foreign countries can be produced in very crude conditions or contain many unwanted impurities that can actually be toxic to your health. We ONLY use activated charcoal produced locally by our friends at Firefly. In addition, they also provide us with locally mined bentonite clay from Southern Saskatchewan. Both are very inexpensive and can be purchased from our online store at Riverstone Naturals.
