20g Activated Charcoal - Organic
The Wellness Product! Activated charcoal, or activated carbon, has an incredibly large surface that acts as an adsorbent - meaning that certain chemicals and toxins adhere to it readily. In fact, 1 cubic inch of activated charcoal contains the same surface area as an entire football field if you could physically count the microscopic pores that make up this wonder product. That is why we are excited to offer Firefly Activated Charcoal - made in Canada from 100% sustainably reclaimed organic hardwood. Firefly products are part of our Natural Living Tribe - locally made across the road from our own studio.
Do you know where your charcoal comes from? Most Activated Charcoal on the market comes from other countries and may consist of bamboo, coconut shell, various wood products and even coal. In addition, many are produced in hand-dug pits with very little quality control. Firefly Activated Charcoal is the only certified organic producer in Canada. Their Activated Charcoal is produced through their custom fabricated pyrolysis equipment.
It's important to note that activated charcoal is not charcoal used in your barbecue grill! BBQ charcoal is loaded with toxins and chemicals, and should never be used for anything other than a fuel source. Activated charcoal, on the other hand, consists of a fibrous product burned without oxygen to create char. The char is then heated to a high temperature and exposed to certain gases through a multi-step process to make it extremely porous. This is the "activation" part of the process. Once activated, what remains is a tasteless and odorless powder that is highly adsorbent, with millions of tiny pores that capture, bind, and remove poisons, heavy metals, chemicals, and gases up to 1000 times its own weight. This process of adsorption (not to be confused with absorption) is what makes charcoal so powerful. The surface of the activated charcoal has a negative electric charge that causes positively charged toxins and gas to bond with it, trapping these toxins and chemicals and assisting to remove them from the body.
Charcoal has been used as a health and beauty product for hundreds of years, going back as far as Egypt c. 1,500BC. Today, its popularity lies in charcoal's ability to adsorb oil, makeup, and pollutants that settle on your skin during the day. It is used to promote clear skin, through body washes, soap, face masks and even bath sponges. Finely ground activated charcoal is also popular for cleaning and whitening teeth and is even being touted as a smoothie additive that claims to do everything from general detoxing to boosting metabolism to curing hangovers.
